Hi everyone -
My name is Kristi White and i will again be coaching the girls this year. I apologize it has taken a while for formal notification, but we have been working on team formations and finalinzing the coaching staff.
I will again be joined this year by Coach Sarah Manier and Coach Angke O'Keefe, which i'm thrilled about. I have known both of these ladies for a number of years, and i'm very excited to be working with them.
1st thing - we combined the 4th and 5th grade teams again this year, so we will have a full roster of 19 girls, 7-4th graders and 12-5th graders. This will serve us well because our new format is 10 v 10! This year we will start adding more attackers and defenders which will give everyone more playtime - 3 attackers, 3 defenders and 3 midies.
Officially, practice was set to start next week, weather pending, but I cannot commit to a start until the following week. So, based on weather, etc., we would like to start the week of February 24th. Our practices are set for Monday and Thursday, 4:30pm - 6:00pm. I don't anticipate this changing, but i will let you know if anything does change.
I would like to have a brief parent meeting after the 1st practice to outline expectations and to answer any questions about the upcoming season, so please plan on coming to the end of practice on the 24th at 5:45pm. Our first weeks of practice we will be incorporating more running than last year, so please make sure the girls have water!
Also, there are some new goggle rules for girls, which came into play for 2020. Please visit the mountainlax website for more details about which goggles you will need to have. \
Some of you are aware, but we switched to a new leage this year. I have included the announcement below, which I encourage you to read.
We wanted to make sure you are informed about a change MLAX has made for the upcoming spring season. Since our inception, MLAX has played in the Colorado Youth Lacrosse Association (CYLA) and we have enjoyed a very strong partnership with the CYLA. The past few years have brought many changes to the Colorado lacrosse landscape and as a result, the state currently has two lacrosse organizations; The Arapahoe Youth Lacrosse league (AYL) and the CYLA. The AYL is made up of lacrosse clubs almost exclusively from metro Denver.
The MLAX board of directors has voted to begin play with the AYL starting this Spring season. This change will be for both our MLAX boy's and girl's lacrosse programs. Historically, for Boys lacrosse, Mountain has advocated strongly for the CYLA and AYL to merge with the goal of providing a better experience for all Colorado youth lacrosse players. While we have not seen this happen, we believe this decision is a first step in that general direction and ultimately our decision came down to doing what is best for the kids and families of MLAX at this time. For our girl's program, AYL is consolidating all of the girl's programs around the state under the AYL umbrella and we needed to make the change in order to continue to provide a great experience for our girls.
You may be asking yourself, what does this mean to me? Well, I'm glad you asked:
The change to AYL was made with two goals in mind: 1) try and reduce drive time to away games and 2) attempt to get each team more equal competition. Fundamentally having more teams in your age division and in closer proximity should help you achieve these goals. We will be playing in the AYL central division which includes, amongst others; teams from Denver, Littleton, Highlands Ranch, and Cherry Creek. The AYL also has more teams across a broader spectrum of talent levels. The goal is to have more even competition for our teams at every age group. While placing teams in the right level is never an exact science, we believe this change gives us the best opportunity for the most competitive games.
Here is an outline of the schedule for this spring:
Practices will start in either late February or the first week of March and games begin the weekend of March 14th. Teams will strive to play 8 regular-season games. Playoffs start May 9th, with Championships held at DU's Barton Stadium on May 16th. Individual teams may also choose to play in one of several tournaments that are offered post the May 16th weekend.
Normally practices start the first week of March, however, given the earlier game start for AYL, we are diligently working to acquire field space for practices during the last 2 weeks of February for teams that wish to start earlier. In addition, we always secure as much time as we can at Golden Goal to give teams additional opportunities to practice if the early season weather is bad. *NOTE: Whether or not a team practices prior to March 2nd will be up to each individual coach.
In closing, this is a big move for our club, and it will not be without its hiccups. Change can often bring with it some unexpected challenges. Please be patient as we navigate through this new chapter for all of us within Mountain Lacrosse.
Spring registration will close Jan 31st and we will get teams formed and practice schedules to you as soon as practical after that date.
